Eminent Domain
Eminent Domain is an action of the state to seize a citizen’s private property for a reason to better society. Eminent Domain could be described as controversial because there are a lot of arguments against it. Some people would say that taking a persons private property to better society is wrong, but other people would disagree.
Utilitarian’s would look at Eminent Domain as a good thing. If taking someone’s house to build a community college, or grocery store, or anything else that would better the majority of the people, it would be looked at as a good thing.
Libertarians would disagree with Eminent Domain. Libertarians believe that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and property. Taking someone’s private property for their own good would go against what Libertarians believe.
Communitarians would agree with Eminent Domain. Communitarians are all about the better for society. Taking someone’s property to do that would be looked at as a good thing.
I believe that Eminent Domain has good sides and bad sides. Taking someone’s private property is obviously wrong, but they have good intentions. If the government is going to take someone’s property to better society, they need to give those people another option. Taking their property and leaving them with nothing I don’t believe is right. But if they offer them something along with taking their land or house, then I think it should stay in the Consitution.
